Avs beat Nucks, Bertuzzi permitted to live

Two fans dressed in orange prison jumpers with Bertuzzi's No. 44 on them greeted the Vancouver forward during warmups and heckled him through the glass. A few others wore fake neck braces to show support for Moore. Next to them were a group of fans wearing horizontal-striped uniforms and sitting behind homemade cardboard jail bars and a sign that said they were dressing up like Bertuzzi for Halloween.

Hurricane Wilma

Record-setter.

Wilma's confirmed pressure readings early Wednesday dropped to 882 millibars, the lowest minimum pressure ever measured in a hurricane in the Americas, but it later lost power and rose to 900 millibars, according to the hurricane center. Lower pressure translates into higher wind speed.

SUVs

(from an AdAge email update, a bit ago...)

The hurricanes that ravaged the southern coasts of the U.S. have also had a major impact on the nation's oil industry and larger economy. Gasoline prices have skyrocketed, spiking above the $3 mark that many view as a trigger that causes large numbers of consumers to significantly change their life habits. The latest reports from the automotive industry indicate that very thing is happening. The bottom has suddenly dropped out of the SUV market and left dealers with a glut of high-powered vehicles of no interest to customers now suddenly focused miles-per-gallon considerations. There is widespread concern that the oil-price impact will continue to spread through other sectors of the economy and ultimately cause marketers to economize by cost cutting, including a pull back in their marketing budgets.

Cubs/Sox. I get it now.

Last night, during Game 2 of the ALCS, The Boy demonstrated something sports-related that I've never really believed in.  Until now.

He's been a Cubs fan for 4 years now. His grandparents on my side are big Cubs fans, we were living in their house at the time, voila. Instant fandom. I, on the other hand, never wanting to jump on the fullest bandwagon, was sickened by how trendy it is to become a Cubs fan in this part of the midwest. So I decided to support the South Siders. And I've been pretty loyal to the White Sox in the AL...save for a flirtation with the Twins last year to get on Dickson's nerves here at work.

Anyway, last night, watching the game, after his homework is done...I realize Skylar is cheering for Los Anaheimgeles every time they do something good.

"Hey!" I bellow, equal parts hurt and surprised. "Cheer for Chicago! C'mon...it's a regional team."

Serious as an oil pan on a '53 Merc, he turns, looks at me and says: "But Dad. I'm a CUBS fan.  It's not right."

Having never lived in the Windy City, I've always thought this Cubs/Sox thing was a learned response. Something that comes from years, nay, generations of cross-town teasing and picking.

Now I understand. It's ingrained in the souls of Cubs Fans. The Sox fans just respond to it out of preservation of their culture.

Wow. And a little child shall lead them...

WCKG/Chicago Staffers Arrested For "Wake the Angels" Stunt

INFINITY FM Talk WCKG/CHICAGO midday sidekick RYAN "MENDER" MENDENHALL and intern CARL KLOCKERS were arrested TUESDAY morning while engaging in the old radio gag of trying to wake up players on the opposing team in town to play the hometown heroes.

MENDER and KLOCKERS were arrested outside the LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM's hotel after being caught roaming the halls and knocking on doors; the two, featured on PETE MCMURRAY's midday show, were attempting to help out the WHITE SOX before the first game of the AMERICAN LEAGUE Championship Series by rousing the already tired ANGELS, who had to fly to CHICAGO after winning the Division Series over the YANKEES in ANAHEIM the night before.

The ruse didn't work, as the ANGELS headed to U.S. CELLULAR FIELD and beat the SOX 3-2 on TUESDAY night. (AllAccess)

Barber inadvertently punches official
NFL.com wire reports
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Oct. 9, 2005) -- Tampa Bay cornerback Ronde Barber inadvertently punched umpire Butch Hannah in the eye when he swung at New York Jets center Kevin Mawae during an altercation in the second quarter of their game.

After the Jets got the ball on the Buccaneers 8 on Ty Law 's second interception of the season, Curtis Martin rushed for 3 yards. After the play, Mawae and Barber got into it. While the two were yelling at each other, Barber took a swing at Mawae with his right hand -- but missed and landed a punch to Hannah's right eye. Hannah was sent sprawling to the field, holding his face, but he got up quickly.

Hannah appeared to be OK and stayed in the game, but was rubbing the eye afterward.

Barber was flagged for unnecessary roughness but not ejected, giving the Jets the ball on the 2. Martin ran it in on the next play for his first touchdown of the season, giving New York a 7-6 lead with 7:32 left in the half.

The Pterry Movie I'd actually want to see...

(from the Discworld Monthly Newsletter, issue 102)

Do you happen to have a spare 15 million USD? It appears that American investors won't raise that amount to make Good Omens. Terry Gilliam has been offered 45 million USD from the international community but it appears that American investors don't have the confidence to back Gilliam due to his shaky track record. For all his brilliance some of Gilliam's films never got finished or went horrendously over budget - Quixote and Baron Munchausen for example. Gilliam wants to cast Johnny Depp to play Crowley and Robin Williams to play Aziraphale.

Oh Wow. Depp and Williams. If you've ever read the book, which Terry Pratchett co-authored with fellow genius Neil Gaiman, you can see how that would work.

I'm not in favor of any of Pterry's novels being made into films...at least not the Discworld stuff. Partially, because no movie could be as good as the one that played in my head while I was reading the original. And partially, because there are far too many arguments against starting at the beginning of the series, or at any other stop along the path of the 30+ novels.

It would be nearly impossible to make one film that even the majority of the fans would enjoy. It would be equally difficult to give all the newcomers the urge to read the rest of the books. We're talking about four distinct groups of main characters. Somebody's gonna get short-shrifted, even if you manage a sequel.

Doing a one-off book, like Small Gods or Pyramids might work...but the fans would bitch and moan.

Frankly, I'd rather not read the grumblings of other L-Spacers out there by seeing a movie made on A'Tuin's back. When I want to see the movie...I'll just pick the book back up.

But I would go see Good Omens in a heartbeat. And perhaps...once I've finally read them...I'd do the same for the Bromeliad or the Johnnys.

Reaching out to the inner wuss

A boy is born and grows up in millitary hospitals. As he grows up, he is subjected to an endless flow of nubile young WAF Nurses who are used to sticking it to soldiers as hard as they can, perhaps in retliation for their latest forgotten night in the barracks, and the word "gentle" is never more powerful than the words "stick this little enlisted brat so I can get out of here and go dancing at the O Club." Genle ain't in their vocabulary, because usually...they poke soldiers who don't give a shit about that kind of pain.

Needless to say, Needles and I have dislike for each other. Deep rooted, unlikely to ever go away...

I was also cursed with my Mother's veins, which hide at the mere sniff of that antiseptic medical facility air. I rarely ever manage to bleed on the first try (today was no different)...which has often made me feel that I could, potentially, survive a stabbing someday depending on where they insert the knife. I bruise bad with a needle, too...because they have to wiggle it around to try and tap the river.

Today, I got two sticks. The first was bone dry, after much digging. The second went in the only vein she could find...right on the bend of the side of my elbow.

Hurts like a motherfucker. And I type all day.

This. Sucks.

I hate to admit, I was kinda pulling for a Boston loss and for the ChiSox to lose as well.

This would have given us a one-game playoff that might have given us the inferior Indians in the first round...

Bucs 17, Lions 13

Tampa's pretty bad, but despite the Lions' best efforts in the 4th...and the Bucs' best efforts to give away the game...TB continues to dominate their former division in the W-L Column.

HUGE day for Der Wifebeater, as Tampa's favorite Asshole, Michael Pittman, gained plenty of yards when Caddy had a bit of engine trouble today.

Griese Kid Stuff, on the other hand, had one of the worst games I've ever seen from him...despite passing for over 300 yds. Gave up 3 picks and kept overthrowing freakin' everybody. With about 9 to go I was screaming for Simms to go in...at the end, The Windsor Pussies had two possible TDs that were out-of-bounds. One was even tallied, then taken off the board, with :06 left.

Hardcore game.

Hitting the Wife Powerball Jackpot...

My Bucs are on...second weekend in a row I get to see my boys. The Beloved Kim is in control of the remote.

When commercials come up...she jumps to the ChiSox game. If they're in commercials...she jumps over to the Colts/Titans game until her mental clock figures the commercials have ended on Fox.

It is an amazing feeling, having a wife who cares THAT much.

(I promised myself I wouldn't CRY...)
