NOPD: To Serve, Protect, and Pillage

"The police are looting. This has been confirmed by several independent sources. Some of the looting might be "legitimate" in as much as that word has any meaning in this context. They have broken into ATMs and safes: confirmed. We have eyewitnesses to this. They have taken dozens of SUVs from dealerships ostensibly for official use. They have also looted gun stores and pawn shops for all the small arms, supposedly to prevent "criminals" from doing so. But who knows their true intentions".

This was also reported on a couple of cable networks tonight, as well.

I have to say, though, that I'd rather see the Police steal the firearms before the animals stealing generators and nikes and plasma TVs do...

Rock on, Biloxi. Rock on.

In Casino Row, along the shoreline...$100,000,000 worth of hotels & casinos were utterly devastated by Katrina.

Miraculously surviving this carnage, however, was the giant guitar sign outside the brand new, still unopened Hard Rock Hotel:

Katrina & The Waves couldn't kill Rock & Roll with "Walkin' On Sunshine" back in the 80's, either...

THOUSANDS MAY BE DEAD IN NEW ORLEANS, MAYOR SAYS

(BBC)

"Hundreds, maybe thousands" of people are likely to have been killed by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, says city Mayor Ray Nagin.

(Times-Picayune)

BATON ROUGE - Some 1,600 patients at nine New Orleans-area hospitals hit hard by Hurricane Katrina are awaiting evacuation, health care officials said Wednesday.

Another 8,600 hospital staffers and their families, along with healthy people who sought refuge in the hospitals during Katrina, also are awaiting help, said spokeswoman Coletta Barrett of the Louisiana Hospital Association.

Oh...and the yellow line below? That's the breech in the levee. (highlighted by farker Chakalakasp)

I asked last night when $3 gas was coming.

It came at 2am.

On our morning show today Craig and I talked about the gas station up the road (a McClure station), which had a gallon of Regular Unleaded 87 Octane posted at $3.49 point 9. That was the highest we had reported from any callers. Several still had it as low as yesterday's popular price of $2.79, all of those have since jumped to $3.19...which seems to be the new average price in South Bend, Indiana.

Far more important than what I pay at the pump is the fact that Lake Ponchartrain is filling the basin New Orleans was built on, and is unlikely to stop until they are the same level. The President flew over the city today to survey the damage first-hand.

This is so great and terrible an event I can't really wrap my head around it.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

My question is this...

...are we talking about having to rebuild New Orleans yet? And how long before $3 gas hits?

Neat. Livan gives up 8 runs in three innings. How quaint. And even though the boys foght back...they STILL couldn't pull it off and blew it in the tenth.

The Beloved Kim told me, as we witnessed the aftermath of the murder on SportsCenter, that I shouldn't worry about it. "They came back to make sure that it wasn't a blowout. They knew it would be better to lose by one and leave the fans with that little glimmer of hope". Or something to that effect.

Time Famine

Just finished scrolling quickly through my TODAY folder in my GMail account. It's where I dump the daily news I get from several sources, most notably the BBC Online Daily Update. I find the BBC to be the best source I have for real news...since it doesn't have any of the GOP-Fellating style of Fox News...or the rigid Hey! This Is Frickin' COOL! vibe of CNN...or the We Still Exist! feel of MSNBC (journalism's witness protection program). The BBC is closer to the international scene, has more integrity, and to me is that classier dame in the corner of the bar that brings to mind the word Smouldering.

I've been so damn busy lately that I've just noticed the last time I read a daily update sheet from them before dumping it into the folder...was July 21st. A full damn month of too busy to be bothered with my news fix.

Gotta change that. My reputation as a news junkie notwithstanding...I'm in danger of becoming even further out-of-touch in my own mind.

Raise your hand if you saw THIS coming...

The good people of Scotts Lawn Service have gone through all the trouble to carefully look over our lawn, and analyze just what it is we need to make sure it's as lush and green as the verge growing on the fertile soil of Paris Hilton's Inner Thigh. We, too, can have the kind of lawn that would make Hank Hill run off and masturbate with gorilla-like fury. Behold, my neighbors! Isn't it time we had a candidate who's been up front about that sort of thing?

POSTED: 4:36 pm EDT August 12, 2005

As another baseball season winds down and NFL training camp updates begin to captivate America, here are 10 interesting developments from the 2005 season that you may not have noticed.

1. Marlins prodigy Miguel Cabrera is hitting in the .350s and battling Derek Lee for the NL batting title.

2. Washington's Nick Johnson has stayed relatively healthy and is finally realizing his potential.

3. A miniature version of Sammy Sosa has been a dud in Baltimore.

4. The Brew Crew is actually making a run at a winning season.

5. Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay has regained his Cy Young form.

6. Jason Giambi, who leads the AL in on-base percentage, has begun his path toward redemption.

7. Moises Alou has found the fountain of youth in San Francisco and is among the NL leaders in hitting.

8. Jason Bay is well on his way to stardom in Pittsburgh.

9. Tampa infielder Jorge Cantu, 23, is quietly having a standout season.

10. Former All Star Eric Milton, who hurled a no-hitter in 1999 with Minnesota, has bottomed out in Cincinnati at age 30.

Heer Be Dragyns

Looking at the photo, these two objects appear to have the characteristics of crawling creatures: The bodies seem to be covered by scales, the backs have spine-like protuberances, and also they have gradually thinning rear ends. A Request To All NHL Players

Take a good long look at this cowardly little pussy:

Do us, the fans of this sport, a huge favor.
Every chance you get to slam his worthless hide into the boards, do it like he just slapped your momma. This man should not be playing hockey. Ever again.
I have never in my life wished bodily harm on any living person, but someone needs to end this guy's season in September. Nothing permanant, mind you. Just something to sit his ass out. Then...do it again next year. And each consecutive year until he gets the point and retires from the game.
And while he's struggling to get up from the ice...tell him this:
"Stand up, Todd. You still can."
